Proactive: AH&W Festival - a Celebration!

June 20, 2019

When people hear the word "festival," it may conjure up images of anything from 100,000 rabid fans, packed in front of a stage for a series of musical acts to a sleepy block party, the curbs lined with small carnival games and neglected tables covered in knick-knacks. Although both may correctly be referred to as festivals, the word is loosely defined as a celebration. The Proactive: Adventure, Health, & Wellness Festival is coming up this July 26-28th with the Doubletree by Hilton in Mahwah as our home base.

The idea for a festival was conceived after having the opportunity to meet a diverse mix of over 100 talented, dedicated people on our Proactive social hikes over the course of the past year. Hearing others speak passionately about their interests, goals, & pursuits within the AHW community had me imagining all that we could accomplish if we worked on something collectively. From regional representatives of larger organizations such as Merrell and Campmor to smaller businesses like Views Apparel Company and Miano Creative Arts Center, the community was ripe for an event that could bring ideas, concepts, and most importantly, people together in an authentic way.

What better way to bring people together than by getting outside and hitting the trails? The weekend will be highlighted by 7 local hikes with Proactive. We'll head out to catch the sunset and sunrise on Friday and Sunday respectively and Saturday we'll be out on the trails for much of the day! Attendees can earn a commemorative patch by joining for at least one hike a day and being at Beacon Sunset.

All the while, the hotel will be the location of a number of partner activities throughout the weekend. Everything from yoga sessions to reiki to survival classes, presented by other AHW locals on site, will be available to attendees. The hotel ballroom will house booths from our partners such as the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, Merrell, Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and more, with free services, games, and giveaways, to visit while waiting for an activity or hike.

On Saturday night, everybody will converge on the hotel ballroom for our closing party, highlighted by live music led by Proactive's own Christian Mena. This will be a celebration of the weekend's collective efforts, of adventure, health, & wellness as a whole, and of feeling alive. After all, the community coming together calls for a celebration on its own. Shake whatever conception of festival you may have and picture something different - a weekend filled with good vibes, physical activity, growth, and personal value, topped off by an genuine party among like-minded peers.

I have been open about wanting to do things differently, to shake things up a bit, and to create opportunities for all involved. The festival will go a long way into achieving all the aforementioned. With a robust referral system, both Proactive Trailblazers & Explorers and our AHW partners will be able to benefit from tickets they sell. We'll also be giving back by donating a portion of the proceeds to both the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.

Our generous AHW partners have also donated an eclectic mix of prizes that will each be raffled off to festival ticket holders. So, even those who are unable to attend, but still want to support our cause, can benefit from purchasing a ticket! Ranging from Merrell Money gift cards to cryotherapy from Paramus Orthopedic Physical Therapy, the diversity in prizes is reflective of the wide range of interests represented.

So, in the end, we're doing something new, something memorable, exciting, and fun. A celebration of the things we enjoy, the people who enjoy those things too, and of being alive.

Be proactive, join the adventure...
