About the Event

Difficulty: EASY

Distance: Approx. 5 miles

Time: 2.5 hours

High Tor offers outstanding views of the Hudson River, the Hudson Highlands to the north, and the town of Haverstraw below. Its vantage point made it an ideal location for Revolutionary War-era beacons, meant to alert the Colonists of approaching British troops. It also served as an air raid watch during World War II. High Tor itself is composed of diabase or “trap rock” -- named for swedish word trappa meaning “stairway”. This is responsible for the perpendicular nature of the Palisades and its cliffs. High Tor is the highest peak of this formation, while Little Tor represents its most northern extent.

Sturdy footwear and appropriate outdoor attire required. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. We will hike rain or shine barring extraordinarily dangerous conditions such as lightning, hurricane, blizzard etc.
